A sensory adventure through the rainbow.
A 12-course journey through colour, sound and cuisine.

1. Project Overview

Colournary is a 12-part immersive sensory experience that fuses colour, sound, cuisine, and performance into a single evolving narrative. Each course aligns with a specific colour frequency, musical key, and culinary expression, with the entire room drenched in the colour of the moment. Visual cues disappear; the guest is guided instead by taste, sound, texture, movement and mood.

The result is a synaesthetic journey where guests taste colour, hear colour, and feel colour, a rare work that sits at the intersection of fine dining, performance art, experimental composition, and immersive theatre.

2. The Experience

Guests arrive in a dimly lit environment before being transported through 12 phases, each marked by:

  • A dish designed around a colour’s emotional and sensory qualities, created by a chef selected in conjunction with the presenting organisation.

  • A musical composition tuned to the relative octave of that colour’s light frequency

  • Lighting architecture or visuals that saturate the room and shift with each course

  • Optional live performers or musicians.

  • A carefully constructed emotional arc from dark, deep tones to bright, ecstatic frequencies through vibrance, decay, and calm.

The format is both intimate and theatrical: equal parts degustation, concert, installation, and ritual.

3. Key Artistic Collaborators

  • Lord Fascinator (Johnny Mackay): Creator and Composer. Sonic architect of the colour-keyed score.

  • Chef (Flexible): Adaptable to any organisation’s preferred chef, culinary team, or guest collaborator.

  • Live Ensemble: Can scale up or down depending on venue and resources.

  • Light / Visual Artist (Flexible): The lighting or visuals artist changes the colour on cue with each dish and musical movement. We welcome using in-house technical staff, local artists, or guest visual designers.

  • Lincoln Savage: Creative Director & Producer (Superordinary). Responsible for Australian iteration, spatial design, and overall experience architecture.

Full team proven in prior delivery and capable of scaling into new cities.

4. Previous Presentation

Colournary has been staged at Superordinary (Brisbane), with high audience engagement, extensive photographic/video documentation, and strong social traction.

The work originated in Mexico as an experimental performance/dining hybrid before being reimagined in Australia with expanded collaborators, a refined run sheet, and elevated production values.

This positions the project as tested, documented, and poised for its next large-scale staging.

5. Audience & Presentation Fit

Colournary is designed for audiences drawn to contemporary art, food innovation and immersive culture. Its modular format can be adapted to cultural institutions, festivals, unconventional venues and brand partnerships while remaining specific to each host city.

Presentation opportunities include:

  • Limited-run format (one to several nights; 80–150 guests per sitting)

  • Co-presentation with cultural institutions, festivals or brand partners, with pre-sale opportunities for members, patrons and VIP communities

  • Optional talks and satellite programming exploring synaesthesia, colour theory, sound, food design and cross-disciplinary practice

6. Value for Partners & Audiences

For Presenting Partners

Colournary offers more than visibility. It provides a platform for meaningful creative integration within a visually distinctive cultural event.

  • Alignment with a high-end experience spanning contemporary art, cuisine, sound and performance

  • Opportunities for considered product, technology or design integration

  • Premium photography and film for campaign and editorial use, with strong earned-media potential across arts, design, gastronomy and luxury culture

For Attendees

  • A rare encounter with an artwork that dissolves the boundaries between performance, dining and installation

  • An intimate and emotionally resonant journey through colour, sound and taste

  • The feeling of participating in a singular cultural moment alongside a creatively curious community

7. Sponsorship & Funding Requirements

To realise Colournary at an international standard, each presentation requires support across culinary, artistic and technical production. Core costs typically include:
  • Executive chef, kitchen team, ingredients, kitchen equipment and service infrastructure
  • Fees for musicians, performers, composer and creative direction
  • Venue hire, spatial design, lighting, sound, AV, staging, production labour and load-in and load-out
  • Photography, filmmaking, documentation, creative R&D and contingency

Indicative presentation budgets begin at approximately US $60,000 and scale according to venue, audience capacity, technical ambition, chef selection and duration.

Partnerships can be tailored to the level and nature of support and may include:
  • Naming rights or co-presenter credit
  • Considered integration of relevant products, technologies or design elements
  • VIP hospitality, private previews or reserved seating

8. Why This Work Belongs in Your Program

Colournary combines a proven format with genuine site-responsive reinvention. Each edition draws on local chefs, visual artists, musicians and technical teams, allowing the architecture, culture and audience of its host city to shape the work.

For presenting partners, this creates a distinctive cultural event with genuine editorial and audience appeal. For guests, it offers something rarer: a synaesthetic encounter that could exist only in that place, with those collaborators, at that moment.
